See You Easter Sunday Morning!

Haiti Bound

  • Very early on Palm Sunday morning
  • Ten of us will fly from National Airport
  • Through JFK to Port-a-Prince
  • We’re going to do whatever God has for us
  • As far as we know now it includes:
  • Building tent cities, helping pastors in their communities, distributing food, clearing away rubble left from the earthquake, leading VBS and ministering to families.
  • We will depart Port-a-Prince on Saturday, April 3
  • We are due to land at National Airport around midnight on the 3rd

What Kind of Church Is That?

  • Several times lately I’ve heard that question.
  • When I tell people we’re taking a mission team to Haiti
  • And that a High School Senior first voiced the vision, people ask:
  • “What kind of church values High School students enough to hear their ideas and follow through on them?”
  • The most recent of these comments came from the person next to me at the barber shop this morning.
  • I didn’t really think about that when Henry first expressed his sense of call to Haiti,
  • But judging from typical reactions out and about,
  • I guess South Run is rare and extraordinary in that way too.

Support the Haiti Mission Team

  • Team Members:  Henry, Jackye and Hank Dodge; Jared, Ryan, Jaehee and Randy Cornell; KT Trotman; Marcio Nunes; and PW
  • Pray for us each day at 7:00 am, 12:00 noon, 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm
    • At meal times, as you pray remember the spiritually and physically starving, thirsty people of Haiti
    • At bedtime, remember the homeless people of Haiti who sleep in tents or streets, and the orphans.
  • Thank you for your gifts designated to the Haiti Mission Trip 2010; continue to make a designated offering to the Haiti Mission Trip 2010 to offset expenses incurred by team members.
  • Only Hank will have his cell phone on the trip.  Susan has emergency contact numbers if you need us.

The Week We Call, “Holy”
To be Holy is to be set apart;
Claimed by God
For His purpose and by His grace;
Not ordinary.
Unusual.
Lest we live every week alike,
And become consumed by monotony,
We hold this week up;
We turn our eyes from the mundane,
We lift our hearts from the human,
We free our hands from drudgery,
We accept the reality of death,
And the bitterness of grief;
But we declare the greater glory of His Life in us and for us.
We treasure the extraordinary love-gift,
Of the Word of God Incarnate,
The Lamb Slain,
The Cornerstone Rejected,
The Prince Peace-making,
The Savior Suffering,
The Lord Rising,
The King Reigning,
And the Spirit Abiding!

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they went in, they did not find the body. 4While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. 5The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.

Then There’s Easter…
When darkness weighs heavy,
When fear haunts
And worries grip;
When you’ve had enough,
Can’t take any more;
When confidence crumbles;
When hope is lost,
When life makes no sense,
When peace eludes,
And love escapes;
When compassion and grace,
Mercy and forgiveness
Seem locked in scripture
Or confined to a dream…
Then There’s Easter
Ephesians 1:18-23—I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, 20which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

See you Easter Sunday!

Love,
Pastor Wayne

  • Sermon Topic—“Fumigate Your Life”

A Lenten Thought for You
Jesus’ first Beatitude is the foundation for all the others: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:3).  "Poor" means impoverished:  a person who has nothing at all and doesn't know where his/her next meal is coming from.   "Poor in spirit" admits our desperate need for God.  Self-sufficiency and Other-dependency dilute our faith.  But for 21st Century Christians, watered-down devotion is the norm.  Around church-people we claim God, but in normal life, we rest as much on materialism, success, and popularity as we do in God.  As if independent of God, we work feverishly to feather our financial, professional and relational nests.  In the first century or in Christian-persecuting-countries today, such duplicity would bring sudden death.  Lent, the forty days before Easter, is a good time to be honest about faked faith.  During this Season of the Soul, return to the boundary line Jesus set in John 15:5: "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”  I recite this passage several times daily to remind myself that no matter how much stuff I have or how many people surround me, I am spiritually poor and I owe my survival and my thriving to Christ.

Come Sunday March 21—The Fifth Sunday of Lent
·       9:45 am—Sunday School
·       11:00 am—Worship
·       Sermon Scripture—John 12:1-7

Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 2There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. 3Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, 5“Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” 6(He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) 7Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial.

“Not Only”
A Lenten Thought for You
Look to the Lord not only for your life, but also for your strength and perseverance.
Walk with the Lord during His temptations in the wilderness and learn from Him.
Not only did He rise to the heights in His baptism, but he sank to the depths to grapple with Darkness.
Not only did the Light of the world take on Shadows and win, but so did you.
Amazing isn’t it that this resilient Savior takes you with Him, not only beside still waters, but also to face the Devil.
Jesus teaches you not only how to serve and pray, but how to charge and challenge Satan’s strongholds,
To correct his lies and to free his captives.
Forty days:
Not only the crucifixion and resurrection of the three, but the clarifying of the forty.
From these forty days, take not only renewed love, but relentless passion.
Train your eyes on Christ’s resolute vision, wrap your mind around His absolute mission.
And when Satan is finished grilling you, until an opportune time,
Break loose not only stronger and freer, but ignited with the flame of Christ
Not only for yourself, but to enlighten others too.

“Friendly” or Relational?
Luke 14:12-13 He said also to the one who had invited him, ‘When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.

South Run is Extraordinary
South Run always exceeds expectations.  “Friendly” churches are a dime a dozen.  Everybody thinks their church is friendly if it is friendly to them and to those like them.  But few churches are intentionally relational.  In today’s mobile and anonymous society, “friendly” is not enough.

Here are some thoughts to move us to the next level.

Personal Remedies:

  1. Let’s become intentionally relational.  When guests or newcomers attend on Sunday morning, welcome them, chat with them, invite them to Bible Study and to Wednesday night.  Make sure they complete and submit a Communication Card.
  2. But don’t stop there.  Give them your address and phone number.  Encourage them to call you if you can assist them.  Get their phone number and address so you can follow up with them.  This is a safe place, most guests won’t mind giving you’re their contact information, if you offer yours first.
  3. Introduce them to church members who live near them.  Exercise the ever important military connection.
  4. Invite them to do what your family is doing:  going out to lunch after church, having pizza Friday night, going to a ball game, playing games,  going out to lunch after church, etc.  When you have friends over, include the newcomer.  Find out what you have in common and build on it.
  5. When they arrive at church the next Sunday, go up and ask them to sit with you.  Introduce them to those around you.  Help them find their way.

Organizational Remedies:

  1. Outreach leaders in every Sunday School Class contacting prospects and following up on guests
  2. Monday Night Prayer and Visitation
  3. Deacons delivering Quick Response Packets following worship each Sunday; Deacons connecting new families with current families
  4. Small Group Ministry immediately assimilating newcomers
  5. Spiritual Gifts Inventory identifying ways newcomers can serve and Church Council orchestrating placement

Their Questions:
The first question a newcomer asks when he/she walks into the church is, “Is there anybody here like me?”  The second is, “Do I fit in here?”  If they perceive the answers to be, “yes”, they are open to staying and returning.  If they perceive the answers to be, “no”, they are eager to leave and don’t plan to return.  Being intentionally relational identifies the likenesses and the fit and builds on these.

Our Resolution: Let’s resolve to not only be conveniently friendly, but to be intentionally relational.

Matthew 28:19-20 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

Tithing Is Not Optional
Malachi 3:8  Will anyone rob God?  Yet you rob me!  But you say, “How are we robbing you?  In tithes and offerings!
·        Tithing is devoting ten percent of our income to God’s work through His church
·        Tithing is demonstrating faithfulness
·        Tithing is trusting God
·        Tithing is proving thankfulness
·        Tithing is investing in God’s kingdom
·        Tithing is disciplining our wants and desires
·        Tithing is accepting responsibility
·        Tithing is giving whether present in worship or not
·        Tithing is worshipping with who we are and what we have
·        Tithing is serving the Lord where we can go and where we can’t
·        Tithing is unleashing the power of God

See you tomorrow and Sunday!
You’re in my prayers and love,
PW
